February 14, 2010 -- Professional triathlete Jessica Jacobs was the top female finisher at the eighth annual Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham, Alabama. She set out with the goal of bettering her winning time from last year, 2:54:54, but was unsure of what the race held for her.
“First, the weather in Birmingham had been unseasonably cold with a good amount of snow that accumulated late Friday afternoon,” Jacobs said. “Secondly, my training volume for this race was substantially lower this year due to a tough battle with bronchitis in late December that prevented me from running for over two weeks.”
Ultimately she succeeded, covering the 26.2 mile course in 2:52:56, at a six minute and thirty-six seconds per mile pace. “Finishing with the final sprint left in my weary legs was definitely a good way to end the race. It is always special and a real treat to win at home!”
Next up for Jacobs is Powerman Alabama, where she will defend the title of top female earned last year.
